At TEACH TEFL we understand that teaching a language in a foreign country can be daunting, there are so many questions.  What, when, how etc.

Here are some frequently asked questions, we are happy to help!! We have all taught in foreign countries so we know.

What does TEFL mean

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.  The acronym is mostly used in courses.  The course will provide you with the tools necessary to teach English as a foreign language.  There are a number of courses available.  In-class courses, which happens on-premises at a school.  Online courses which you can do at your own leisure and combined courses which will include practice (on-site) time and online theoretical course work.

The 120-hour certificate is the minimum requirement for most recruiters and schools worldwide.

What is the difference between TEFL and TESOL

TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

These two acronyms are interchangeable and there is no difference between these two certificates.   Both can be used worldwide

Do I need a degree to work overseas?

Most countries require you to have a degree.  There are however jobs available for non-degree holders, but it might be harder to find a job without a degree.  The best idea is to do some research first and see what the requirements are per country.

I have a degree, why do I need a TEFL certificate

This is typically a requirement from the governments who issue the visas for teaching.  You don’t require a teaching degree to work in Asia, any BA degree will do.  The TEFL certificate will thus prepare any graduate to be ready for the classroom.

I do NOT have a degree, can I work abroad

A TEFL certificate is only one of the requirements you need to teach abroad. These requirements differ depending on which country you are interested in.  South Korea you need a degree.  China you need a degree for a Z Visa.  There are people who find jobs abroad without degree’s but it is advisable to do research on the visa requirements per country.  You do not want to enter a county with an incorrect visa and face deportation or criminal charges.

Where can my certificate take me

Your TEFL or TESOL certificate can be used anywhere in the world.  It is important to note that certain countries have restrictions/rules based on your citizenship.  For example, it is very difficult for a South African to find a position in a European Union county.

South Africans or Saffers as we are called overseas most commonly go to Asia.

South Korea is a lovely country to teach in (degree needed).  China, Thailand, Vietnam are all popular destinations.

Other options are Russia or Eastern European countries.
